The proposal

A duel of notes: Adalberto Ferrari and Nadio Marenco reinvent the genres of tradition

The protagonists of this improvised musical show are a duo of musicians who, armed with their respective instruments, “challenge” each other to the last note, reinterpreting the most varied musical genres – from choro to instrumental versions of the Italian singer-songwriter tradition, from klezmer pieces to swing and jazz.

“…the understanding, what lies beyond the written score, the moment, the unexpected, the breaking of patterns, the pleasure of shaping together – through composition and improvisation – a single sonic object that carries the audience on a journey – a different one for each listener! – of emotions and virtual images.
The repertoire of this recording project features many themes drawn from the Brazilian choro tradition, some from the klezmer repertoire and others from jazz standards.
The musical genres presented may seem far apart if one thinks of their traditional setting, but the transformation and the language used by the duo mean that the thematic idea, the rhythmic, melodic or harmonic character of the traditional piece becomes a spur and raw material for “telling a story” that is built as it unfolds, a little like the old storytellers, but without words… the music speaks.”
