The proposal

Music inspired by Charlie Parker and Lindsay Cooper

The concert project Borrowed Fragments springs from the meeting of the pianist Umberto Petrin and the clarinettist Adalberto Ferrari, two musical personalities who join forces to develop a sonic path founded on the idea of transforming and renewing the language of improvisation.

The starting point of the work is “borrowed fragments” drawn from the repertoire and thinking of two key figures in the history of music, from different eras and with different stylistic signatures: Charlie Parker and Lindsay Cooper.

Despite their historical and aesthetic differences, the two composers share an intense drive to explore and an openness to extra-jazz languages, ranging from bebop insights to rock and the new artistic avant-gardes.

The duo’s approach rejects any philological or celebratory intent, adopting instead a procedure akin to that of the great masters of contemporary figurative art, such as Francis Bacon, Frank Auerbach, Jenny Saville and Cecily Brown, where the starting figure and material are continually deconstructed, reshuffled and recreated through a new code.

In this unified, personal narrative flow, original pieces by the duo alternate and merge with reworkings of the two masters’ pieces.

The music is constantly interwoven with the spoken word delivered by both musicians as narrating voices: short texts, reflections, suggestions and evocations relating to Parker, Cooper and other kindred voices become an integral part of the performance.

The interaction of sound, improvisation, word and colour defines shifting visions and textures rich in chiaroscuro and contrast, in which irony plays a key role in opening up unexpected rifts and developments.
